When you see lightning you will hear the thunder later because light travels faster than sound. Sound travels at about 1100 feet per second at ground level, so it takes sound about 5 seconds to travel one mile (5280 feet). For all practical purposes light travels instantaneously since it's speed is 300,000 km/s.

So measure the time between when you see the lightning and when you hear it and then divide by 5 to get the approximate number of miles away that the lightning struck. Or if you prefer metric then divide by three to find out the distance in kilometers.

i think the speed of light is approximately 300000000 meters per secands. so to calculate the distance that the light cut, multiply the interval of time by the above value.
