adding another phone jack? We only get dial up if that matters. It's not convient to just run an extenstion cord from the current jack. I don't know anything about routers; is that what I need?

Well other than what you've put here already. there are some phone line adapter systems that plug in to your home electrical wiring and can make it so you have a jack anywhere. You should look into that...

Your wording is confusing.

You talk about the phone access suggesting a dial up connection. Later you talk about a router suggesting a broadband connection.

1. If you have dial up, you can add a second hard wired phone jack in another room and splice it to the current phone jack. Splicing is easy (red wire to red wire under the red painted screw, etc). Running wire through the wall is a bit harder.

2. If you have DSL broadband you can do the same as in # 1 above. Connect DSL modem to the new jack; put the voice filter in the original jack for voice use.

3. If you have CATV (cable internet) service, you need to run a CAT5 cable from the modem to the pc. This uses no phone wire so I presume you do not have this.

If the above has not addressed your need, please write again as a new question and provide a clearer description of what you have and wish to do.

On dialup you can not use a router. You will have to run an extension to a second jack

Yes, adding another phone jack is the answer.

If broadband is not available - have you considered satellite access?

You can have a cabled connection and a wireless connection from the same router. Cable the distant computer and leave the closer one wireless.
