I know that if the groundhog sees its shadow, that means six more weeks of winter. If it doesn't, that means early spring. However, how early is this "early spring"? 1 week? 2 weeks?

you were not paying attention to the fable.

If the Groundhog sees it's shadow, it will be six more weeks of winter.

If it doesn't, it will only be a month and a half until spring.

A month and a half is six weeks! It's the same!

It does not matter what the groundhog does because Spring is always 6 weeks from Groundhog day

The four cross-quarter days (Feb 2, May 1, Aug 2, Nov 1) were all used as inverse weather predicters by ancient pagans. If the weather was mild then, the bad weather would return and it would be six weeks (the approximate length of time to the next pagan holiday) before one could expect it to lighten up. If it was harsh weather, one could expect it to get progressively better starting then, probably with notable results in a week or two.

The whole "Groundhog Day" idea is a window into the human mind's desperate need to make the unpredictable, random universe conform to some comforting, predictable pattern.

6 weeks less than it would have been if the groundhog saw his shadow
