I'm a fan of AMD, but if you want to play games I would suggest not to buy the X2 4200+ but rather the X2 5200+. It isn't so expensive after all.

----------------------------------------... pass with AMD's SOCKET 939 SEMPRON (popping out quickly)....then u can improve later to a twin center want be...! in simple terms make effective the motherboard may additionally help the twin center proc. PLUS socket 939 is a examined (for years now) socket/platform and AMD's socket AM2 does no longer supply u plenty extra interior the way of overall performance. the two Sempron socket (754, 939, AM2) will enable (or already incorporates the sixty 4 bit education set) a sixty 4 bit improve. The classes (video games/fairly some apps) are continuously years in the back of the hardware whether is be a sixty 4 bit proc or a twin center proc. A Sempron (AMD's corresponding to the Intel Celeron) is all maximum persons want and can get any genuine use or internet earnings from. Joe... --------------------------------------...

if you wish to overclock you will have much better luck with a core 2 duo. If you use a non stock cooler that is decent you can get 1 ghz faster. (if you dont understand this just omit it)
the x2 4200 doesnt compare to the e6300 but a better comparison is the e6550 to the x2 6000
x2 6000

item=N82E16819103773
e6550
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115030
the 6550 is slightly faster and will overclock better
the amd i just as good if your and amd fan
i recomend the 6550 over the 6300 because it has twice the cache (4 mb vs 2) and is faster for only about 20 dollars more

If you wish to upgrade in the near future then if you opt for an AMD dual core then go for the 6000 and as much memory and fast graphics card you can afford, if you go for Intel then go for the best Intel chip you can afford.
If you are prepared to wait then AMD are bringing out their Phenom processor will will make everything else look decidedly slow. at the end of the day you pays your money and makes your choice, but seriously Phenom is the way to go if you can wait four to six months

The E6300 is slightly better. Its gaming performance is comparable to an AMD X2 that is clocked at 2.4 Ghz (the X2 4600+). Gaming benchmarks here:

I would get the Intel for 3 reasons
1) It is faster
2) Intel is more stable; crashes less
3) If you choose a motherboard that also accepts the Core 2 Extreme, you can upgrade to the core 2 Extreme (4 times faster) in a couple years when prices come down and get several more years of use out of the system.
Get at 2GB of fast RAM to go with it.
-------------------------
Per CPU gaming performance charts, see link below.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 Winsor
Performance Index = 1.59 (Lower is faster)
Core 2 Duo E6300 $140
Performance Index = 1.50
Core 2 Duo E6850 3 GHz $285
Performance Index = 1.09
Core 2 Extreme QX 6800 3 GHz ($900)
Performance Index = 0.38 WOW!
Intel makes the three fastest processor models:
Core 2 Extreme
Quad Core
Core 2 Duo

Graphics Cards
The choice in graphics card is even more important than the choice for CPU. I would only buy one that supports DirectX 10.
Take a look at the major difference in picture quality between the two DirectX versions here. You must have Vista to use DirectX 10.

For playing games get a card as fast as the 8600GTS or faster. Refer to "Graphics card gaming performance charts" below.
Mid Range Video Card
8600GTS From $140
HDTV / S-Video / Composite Out

Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 22 Amp Amps.
Top End Video Card for Extreme Gaming
8800 Ultra ($585 to $800)
HDTV / S-Video Out
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000380000+1067928976&Tpk=8800+Ultra
Minimum of a 500 Watt power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 34 Amps.
Two available 6-pin Molex hard drive power dongles
My opinion:
It will require a 600 Watt supply to get the 34 AMP rating. Card can probably play any game at 120 Frames per second.
The 8800 Ultra is twice as fast as the 8600 GTS .

Click this link to compare the two CPU's. I think the bottom line is that you are not going to notice much of a difference between these two for gaming.

Never buy the AMD. The cache on Core 2 Duo is twice as big, which games sooo much better. I would suggest getting a better processor. If you spend a little more now, you will be happier later!!!

first, you said 'parts', be sure which processor is supported by your motherboard..
second, let's say both processor have a frequency of 3.2Ghz.. so basically it is of the same speed, regardless of company who made it...
but regarding the brand (Intel and AMD)..they only differ in 'Heat Dissipation' AMDs gain temperature faster than Intel..
third, you said the processor is intended for game, i would suggest the AMD (majority of gaming cafe uses AMD together with latest videocard), Intel are more focused on Productivity Software (word processing, Video Edting, etc...)
