for a quick repair, just knock the freeze plug into the block, it doesn't matter it's only going to rust out in a month or two, will not create a problem, in fact many repair shops do this, then to install they make a freeze plug that really easy to install it has an expanable rubber you install it in the hole and has a nut in the center you tighten

There are specific freeze tool plug removers. They involve punching (not drilling) a hole in the plug and putting in the tool, which looks like a pointy drift pin, and prying the plug loose. Since it is secured only at its expanded end it comes out easily once it is started.
When you take it out make sure you have a replacement plug and a re-installation tool.

I tap them in the center with a small chisel until it creases and the lip hangs out then I pull on it with vise grips or channel locks.

i will assume you mean a freeze plug, but with a hammer and a punch and a simple pair of pliers. tap one side of the plug in, when one side goes in the other will come out, grab it with the pliers, and just pull it out. decided to do this to my engine a bout 8 months ago, had three that sere leaking. not too difficult to do as long as you have a strait shot at what you are trying to hit. i had to pull the engine out.

Once you are able to get to it you can drive a small chisel into it to weaken it so you can twist it out.
Sometimes hitting it near the edge will cause it to flip int he hole. Don't loose it in the block & don't mar the side of the hole.
Good luck
