I'm looking into colleges, leaning towards NYU. Can someone give me an idea of what the vacation time is like? What time Christmas vacation starts and ends, what time Spring break starts and ends, you do get summer vacation, right?! When does it start, how long is it? Please help me! I'm so confused! I can go home during Christmas/spring/summer Vacation, can't I? I'm home-schooled and I really have no idea about this stuff!

Thanks so much.

Wow, I was homeschooled too! :) I'm not going to school in NYU, but at my school, we get out for summer break around the end of the second week in May, and school comes back the third week in August. We get Christmas break from the end of the second week in December to the end of the second week in January. Spring break is usually a week near the middle of March. (In addition, we get three days off in October for Fall Break, but I'm not sure other schools do that).

Everything really varies depending on schools, but this is the general breakdown.

You arrive in late August or Early September. This is to break the freshmen into the campus, give them orientation, meet dorm-mates, ect.

You'll have some time off for thanks-giving (maybe 3-4 days)

You'll get some GOOD time off for christmas around the mid december to early january (maybe like 2-2.5 weeks)

Then it can be a bit cloudy. My friend didn't have a winter recess in march like some schools did, but he had a long spring break.

Spring break is usually a week or two in march or april.

Then it's usually a long haul from April to may or early june till you get out.

Don't worry about being able to go home. They give you time off for holidays for the simple reason that everybody loves having christmas with their family!

The general view of "time to go home" is yours to decide. Unless you have something important (a seminar, or classes) you can be wherever you want.

Just make sure a week before your vacations you know you schedule.

I.E.

Last class is friday
You leave for home saturday morning
get home sunday morning
stay till friday
be back in dorm by satuday
use sunday to recooperate from travels.

Aside from that have fun! I don't want to stereotype homeschoolers but if you're in need of somebody to talk to big schools (all schools really) have counselors who help kids that feel lonley, bored and homesick. =)

At my school we have 6 weeks for winter break. It starts around the middle of December and we go back the last week in January. There's a winter term in between the fall and spring semester. Then spring semester ends around the third week in May and there are 2 summer terms. The fall semester starts the last week in August. Not all schools have the same schedule. Winter and summer terms are optional in college. They give you a chance to get extra credits. Usually school's post a calendar on their website. Here's one for NYU...

In college, Christmas vacation can generally be 3 weeks to a month, depending on when your fall finals are(usually first or second week in December)...Spring semester generally starts around the second week in January...

Spring Break is generally a week in the middle of March...

Yes, you can go home during these times...Most colleges close the dorms during breaks, but make exceptions for people who can't leave...

I have a friend there right now and he spends his summer upstate near is first college Sienna because he has friends there and likes the area (his family lives in the Bronx).

You get about a week or two in winter and a week or two in spring.

Often there are student cruises at good rates. You know Princess Cruses to the Bahamas, Hawaii, Cancun.

This luxury is usually only available to undergraduates.

Graduates often get stuck on Medical Rounds or doing a Law Project or having to nurse a Biology or Chemistry project or having to worry about their Master's Thesis re-writes.
