Hard core criminals cannot be pardoned and have to undergo some sort of punishment. Death sentence is no solution and life imprisonment would be a burden on the respective authorities. The best way would be is to put them on an island far away and forget them. This is what the British did to their hard core criminals. They were all dumped in Australia. Today one can see what has happened to Australia !!!!

Punishments should mirror the crime as exactly as possible. A drunk hurts another driver, then whatever injuries the other driver suffers, are duplicated on the offender. Yes, rip off a leg, and let them lay in a ditch, for the same time as THEIR victim suffered. Identity theft? Then, take the thief's identity away. Yup, zero social security records, no driver's license, no ID at all. A car thief would be stranded in the middle of a desert, and either gets out on their own- or they die. A rapist, would be raped. A drug dealer would be forced to become addicted. No matter how terrible the crime- let the offender experience the same act. Live, on TV. Forget rehabilitation- PUNISH. Prisons should be so terrible that a person would choose suicide rather than ever return to prison.

I fully agree with the strong views expressed by many friends above and particularly the friend Vijay M. His views are very precise and well reasoned for toughness with hard core criminals who are burden to the society as long as they live in society not only while they commit crimes but also they are tried and prosecuted and thereafter also if they are jailed as well. But how to establish without a lengthy proceedures of trials and condemn a real criminal for a particular crime and deport him to a yet uninhibited land away from the main population of the country immediately on committing a crime is a matter worth pondering for.

Hardcore criminals have no place in society. They are burden to the whole human civilization & should be eradicated completely. If you think they can be reformed at any stage then let them be put in an isolated place far away from society & if possible away from other humans may be in some forest or desert area where they survive to live by their own means. Why should government & tax payers lift their burden even by keeping them in prison for all their deeds which brought suffering to common man in general & victim in particular? I have no sympathies for hardcore criminals & feel the money spent in investigating & prosecuting them itself cost a lot to us & what for we spend this money for them to get released either at the time of prosecution or after completion of their sentence & start their criminal activities once again. Do you know the various investigating test such as Narco analysis test done on them cost a lot of money, similarly the prosecution lawyer's fees spent in getting them prosecuted is born by the government. All this money is being collected from us the tax payers. Why should we pay for these rascals who brought such suffering for us & spoilt the whole peaceful atmosphere of the society? If we spend more to get them reformed what’s the guarantee they will change & live like civilized citizen in future? Can any one give that assurance?

I think they should have an island where they send all these criminals to live together, sort of like in the film 'Escape from LA'. There they will only be a menace to each other and some sort of military force can guard the sea around the island to make sure no-one escapes from it

I'm not a big fan of death sentences, except maybe in extreme cases, and even then I consider a life sentence to be a more severe punishment, since for all we know, when you kill someone - they are just dead, no afterlife, no 'burning in a pit of fire for eternity' etc.

I don't care if someone does get executed (as long as it isn't me) but it generally takes decades, and by that time it is pointless.

Depending upon the crime, those that commit murder should die in the same manner as those they killed, if the victim was stabbed to death, then they should be stabbed to death, if the victim's body was mutilated, then they are mutilated and so on.

In other words, the punishment they receive should match the punishment they dealt out.

Death by hanging... Would cost a lot less than all the other options. Mercy isn't cheap, because we spend way too much on prison inmates as it is.
