One of my pet peeves:

Young women who can draw pretty little pictures of horsie heads all day and bask in the compliments of their peers. But ask them to create anything else and all they can draw is a blank stare.

This skill is nice for decorating school binders, but genuine creativity takes hard work and constant practice. An artist, as opposed to an artisan does not limit his or her scope to single subjects. Even a specialist, such as a medical illustrator will take the time to practice quick sketches of trees, flowers, buildings, cars, landscapes, kittens and whatever else is within eyeball reach. Creativity comes from knowing how the world and all its parts interact and influence each other.

All you budding artists: Learn to diversify and don't let yourself get stuck in a rut, like Anime, super heros, hot rods, sword and sorcery, fruit and vases or pretty pony heads. SEE the world and capture a little of it in your sketch books.

- Anime - or any image of a beautiful teenager with huge eyes
- Barns, old mills, a cabin in the mountains
- "Abstract Art" made by someone who claims "I can't draw, but I just LOVE to paint!"
- Asian lettering made by/for non-Asian people - or for that matter, any emotionless icon mass-produced for profit
- Graffiti lettering
- Tribal tattoos

Go ahead, bash me for it - then come up with something new & refreshing, please!
