A spider uses two types of silk to create a web.

The first is a non-sticky kind that they use to create the "arms" of the web that run outward from the center.

The second is a sticky type that they use to construct the "spiral" of the web.

Spiders only walk on the non-sticky part of the web.

Some spiders have "greasy" tips to their legs, but most spiders create webs with multiple strands, on which some are coated with the sticky membrane as it is produced, and some aren't. If a fly touched the non-sticky web, it could walk along it just fine - but normally they're stupid and confused, and wind themselves up by flapping etc. Easy mistake - easy meal.

I believe it's because there are alternet runs of sticky & non-sticky threads in the webs construction. The spider obviously knows the difference, & only uses the safe path.
Everything else gets trapped.. :)

WHEN SPIDERS CREATE THEIR WEBS THEY DO SO WITH PARTLY STICKY SILK AND SILK THAT IS JUST WELL SILK.

THE SPIDERS KNOW WHICH PART THEY CAN AND CANT WALK ON!

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR LEGS LIKE SOME PEOPLE ARE SAYING!

If you look at spiders legs with a magnifying glass you will see that they are rough and hairy which allows them to move on their webs without difficulty.

Spiders do not get stuck because their legs contain glands which secrete a kind of non-sticky liquid.
