I have worked in law inforcement and as a correction officer. I've seen many laws being broken by the officers. When I complained I was the one who got set up and repermanded. As a civilian I've seen many traffic laws broken by patromen. To name a few like speeding , double parking, leaving their patrol car unattened with engine running, use their police car as their own private car, park blocking a Fire Hydrant,
and ect. I don't believe this is right but everyone acts like it's okay. I've even heard they have a special right to do this.

I can tell by the answers I got that some of you feel that it's alright for a police office to break the laws.

When I worked as a correction officer some of the other guards use to harass the inmates. So you think it's okay. And you swore to up hold the law. Shame on you!

I did not make false allegations. Some of them even stole food and money and got away with it all. I know one county wheere the sheriff went to jail for stealing food. Of couse in our department they got away with it all. Nobody seem to care.

I don't deal with it any more. I've got an early retirement and have been retired for 8 years. I saw some thing on TV that made me ask this question.

Of course they shouldn't but of course they do - think their friends are going to arrest them?

Let's look at your questions....

1. Speeding - allthough it depends on the individual agency's standards, the officer may be going to a hot call that would preclude the use of lights/sirens which would tip off the BG.

2. Double parking - what was the officer doing? If he was out there writing parking tickets, then it's probably a non-issue. If he spent the hour eating while double-parked, that's another story.

3. Car unattended with the engine running - this is not a violation of ANY traffic law that I know of. There are times when it SHOULD be left running when unattended (ie, at a traffic accident or traffic stop, crime in progress, etc...). Generally, it shouldn't be left running if he's at the station for a long period of time. Remember there are electrical loads (radios, MDC, etc...) that could run the battery down if the engine is not left running.

4. Police car as private car - many agencies have policies that allow officers to take the patrol cars home at night - esp in rural areas. The Washington State Patrol used to allow this years ago.

5. Blocking a fire hydrant - Again, what was the officer doing? If he was out there writing parking tickets, then it's probably a non-issue.

Before you go castigating an officer's actions, you might look at the entire picture. You might not know always what the officer is doing.

Police have to obey laws, just like everyone else. You already found out what happens when you complain. People make false accusations against policemen all of the time. Without proof positive, such as video tapes and eye witnesses, the supervisors will not do anything.

See it all the time, especially speeding. I live in an apartment complex next to our local police station, which is on top of a hill. I see them all the time not come to a complete stop at the stop sign at the bottom, but every couple of months, a cop will hid behind a building at the hill and write citations all day long to people not coming to a complete stop. But, what are you going to do? Turn them in. The their buddies harrass you.

If you see an officer doing it - just take note of their car #, and call internal affairs and report them.

They might laugh it off, but if they continue to receive calls about the same officer, they will have to take some kind of action.

you should have been reprimanded, what a loser telling on them.

I am sure you are everyone's favorite at work.

I was a sheriff's deputy and if you work at my place i would have planted drugs in your car tipped off another department.

They are breaking the very laws they are suppose to enforce if they do this.
