Cuba has always been under a dictatorship of some kind. Actually the citizens of Cuba have faired better under Castro than the previous dictcator. The previous dictator was in cahoots with the United States mafia prior to Castros takeover in the early sixties. This leads to conspiracy theories surrounding President John Kennedy's assasination. President Kennedy's brother Robert Kennedy was then Attorney General and investigating the mafia and its activities in Cuba. A few years later Robert Kennedy was also assinated. Prior to Fidel Castros change to dealing with Communist Russia, the United States supported Fidel Castro.

Fidel overthrew a dictator that was repressive which was represented by the elite at the expense of the majority who were poor. Which was ripe for an overthrow.
What the Cuban people had in return is an education and universal health care system that they did not have before. While there are people in Cuba who undoubtedly hate him, nevertheless there are more who love him.
Just the same as Mao in China. Something I had a hard time understanding till I started living here and found out, while the Chinese people know Mao screwed up in some area's, the good outweighs the bad.
I suspect after Fidel dies, that he will be highly regarded in Cuba as the father of the new Cuba and will be thought of, like Mao***, both good and bad.
Peace

****Officially in China, Mao is regarded as 30% bad and 70% good.

A Batista lunched a military coup to take over. His regime was corrupte and the people were becoming abused. Castro and his rebels took over the island next. Under them everyone was poor so it did not matter. Plus he extend government service to people who did not receive them in the past. He has stayed in power through oppression and by making sure there is food on every ones tables.
People can stand a lot of oppression. When they run out of food, thats when dictators are overthrown.

the people were repressed...Castro traveled to the U.S. many times to raise money before the revolution and never made a secret of the fact that he was a socialist, he went commie when the USSR was the only country that supported Cuba after the revolution, the U.S. refused aid because the corporate masters of Dole Fruit & the big sugar comapnies forbade it

The desire for independence from its powerful neighbours. Democratic systems are easily manipulated (just look at the US those with more money to finance their campaign generally win) so if a small country like Cuba want to run their own affairs they need strong, stable leadership not more powerful countries paying off the political elite to sell out their countrymen.

Fidel Castro took over the country, by force, from a dictator. He did not tell anyone he was a Communist until he took over. It was a surprise.
