Osteoarthritis affects mostly the large joints like the hips and rheumatoid arthritis mostly affects the small joints like the knees, knuckles and wrists.
Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative arthritis and is the more common form.It results from wear and tear on joints although metabolic, genetic and other factors also contribute.
Rheumatoid arthritis is the more severe form and is an autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system acts against and damages joints and surrounding soft tissue.
Many joints eg hands, feet and arms become extremely painful, stiff, and deformed.

Arthritus is a general term referring to hundreds of different disorders that effect the joints of the body.. and one of those is called Osteoarthritis... this is when the normal fluid and 'cushion' in the joints is worn away and the there is pain associated with bone-on-bone friction.

Other forms of arthritis, like Rheumatoid Arthritis, happen when the body's immune system attacks the connective tissues-joints causing inflamation and pain in the joints.
