Despite the obviouse fact that this is obviously a man bashing question, I will assume that this is a serious question.
Invention relates to the idea of creation. So you may have been better placing this in the religious section, but what the hell.
The earliest stories related to the creation of man come from the Euthrates area. Summarian. There is a story that the first beings upon the earth were the gods. They worked hard to till the land, make things grow, ensure that water flowed and generally doing what gods do.
They got a bit tired of this and so had a meeting. They decided to go and see the wise Ea in his watery kingdom. He sugested that a race of servants be created to take up the burden so that the gods could get on with godly things (Eating, drinking, fornicating and bumping each other off). To this end, An brought clay from the river bank and fashioned people. He then breathed life into them, but only so much life, since immortality was for the gods alone. Thus was man created and set to work. The gods, understandably, were quite happy with this arrangement and set about doing some serious partying.
There are other creation stories, so take your pick.
Luck :)

Men were invented so that God could take one of mans ribs and make a woman to be a Good friend and companion to him.
Some mutation seems to have taken place recently and now many women are often neither friendly nor good companions for men.

The quasi-purpose of the "invention" if you like of males was to increase genetic diversity, since the offspring have gene input from both parents

Cos when you are making something..you always make a prototype first, to see what doesn't work right. then you put it right on the next production run. (But just one man would have been very lonely, and you do need a male and female of a species for it to continue to exist.)
So the answer is really, simple biology.

Actually, women were "invented". God pulled out our freakin rib to create a woman to be with man. The real question is, why were women invented? And the answer is of course to give guys something to play with!!

Asexual reproduction like Parthenogenesis has it charms, but with sexual reproduction and its genetic recombination your species will adapt faster to a changing environment. Ask any eukaryote.
