I have noticed on a couple of notebooks that the c2d 1.6 seems to be a little sluggish when loading programs. I am glad therefore that I opted out for a 1.73 core duo instead . The performance of cd is more than enough for me. Anyone else has similar experience ?

loading programs has more to do with ram (random access memory) than it does with processing speeds. You'll see more of an improvment with multitasking programs if you add another 256mb+ to your computer. With computers- you should always opt for the better specs all-around. You'll never know when you need to run some more advanced, power-hungry programs on your computer later in it's life.

The Core 2 Duo 1.6 is actually faster than the Core Duo 1.73 because the Core 2 can do more work per clock cycle (it also has 64 bit support but that won't matter for many people since almost everyone still runs 32 bit OS's).

Though either way it shouldn't matter because the performance difference is insignificant to the speed at which general purpose applications run. There's probably something else with the specs of the Core 2 Duo 1.6 notebooks that's slowing them down (not enough RAM Is probably it although a slower hard drive or even misconfigured software could also be to blame).

Given that the clock speed of processors has tended to go up (with a minor detour back down with the replacement of the Pentium 4) I suspect that a given Core Duo 1.73 laptop might have better specs in areas other than the processor than a Core 2 Duo 1.6 laptop which would be considered lower end when released.
