Different people will have different experience.
Like some will complain of having stomach cramps etc.
Our bodies generically follows our parents.
When having your period. you do not gain weight bcos of fats nor cellulite. You gain weight bcos of water retention.
This explains the bloated feeling inside our tummy.
If u're the skinny kind, u shouldnt be worried at all ^_^
but if u're really feeling very bloated thus making u uncomfortable, try taking some Panadol Menstrual(Pink pills)

I don't know about anyone else, but besides bloating...I seem to crave sugar more during my period. So going overboard with craves will make you gain a pound or two. Just drink a lot of water. It will help with the bloat and cramps. So no, it's NOT true.
