I am a sewing machine technician and will tell you this is not something your going to fix yourself unless your not putting it back in right. The round thing your referring to is called a hook and what it goes into is called a hook case. Sounds to me like it needes a good clean, oil, and adjust by a technician. Look in the Yellow Pages.
Good luck.

Take the bobbin out along with the bobbin case ( pointy thing). While they are out clean out all the lint and threads from the bobbin housing. I use a soft paintbrush. Make sure you go into all the nooks and crannies around the bobbin housing.

Now place the bobbin case back but don't put it in all the way. Turn your wheel on the right sided of the machine to make the needle go up and down. The case should slide into place once you have rest of the bobbin assembly in the right position.

It is hard to say what is wrong. Everyone has hit upon good suggestions. I don't think anyone has mentioned oiling the bobbin case...but I'm thinking that Richard has hit the nail on the head...

You may need professional help. If you managed to get all the thread out and cleaned the area around the bobbin case and oiled the machine...it's time for some pro's.

PS: Richard, as I am an avid sewer, sewing machine techs are top of my list! They are my best friends in my time of need!

Before you take it to the shop and pay for repairs, check and see if there's any thread caught somewhere around that area. Even a tiny piece of thread in just the right spot could keep the bobbin case from moving freely.

It sounds like it hasn't been tuned up & cleaned in a while anyway. It really should be done every year. The technician will fix the round thing, which by the way is called a hook race. That's not something you need to know if you aren't a pro, but it helps to be able to describe the problem.

Your bobbin casing isn't seated properly. If you can't fix it yourself, you need to take it into a technician. The tech can then show you how to fix it and then you can do it if this same thing happens again.
