after I turned the ignition off....everything went back to normal....but the gages still act weird and give funky readings...what could cause this situation?

You have a bad ground between the engine and the chassis. Since the battery and alternator are gounded to the engine and the gauges and lights are grounded to the chassis, if you don't have a good connection between the two, everything will go crazy.
The ground wire to the chassis could come from the engine or the negative battery connector.

I don't know anything about car repair but I can tell you that I had a Grand Prix that did this years ago and it ended up being the computer in the car went bad.
Is your check engine light on? If so then you can take it to Auto Zone and they will put it on the computer for free and tell you what is wrong with it.

Take it to Autozone and have them check for Computer codes even if the engine light is off.

You might have a bad ground or your alternator could be going bad. I have had both happen.
