Obviously the mine was unsafe to go in because it collapsed down on them again even though they thought that it was safe with the strategy that they were using to support the mine. I think that another plan to rescue them would have been better because more have been killed trying to dig their way into te 6 others. I really hope and pray for these families and miners, it's such a sad thing.

Regarding the owner's negligence, yes there were citations. However, keep in mind that ALL coal mines in the US get citations all the time. I'm not defending this guy, but his company (and, he) has received numersous awards over the past few years for operating safe mines. I actually checked on some of the citations they received, and found about a dozen to be that they didn't have toilet paper in their porta-potties. To take this a step further, the coal in this mine is almost gone. They were taking out the last of it by a technique called "retreat mining." When they mine coal, they leave pillars of coal along the way to support the roof. They were systematically knocking down these pillars (from the back), and "retreating" as the removed the coal. This practices has been OK'd by the US government for decades. However, in this case, I believe this particular practice was unsafe.

In my opinion, the mine was unsafe. They deserve our prayers...it wasn't that long ago that we had a similar situation here in Pennsylvania. Certainly my heart and condolences go out to all the families and loved ones.

I think we'll find it was very unsafe. They have all been in my thoughts and prayers. Also the families who are going through the pain of loss.

All mines are inherently 'unsafe,' it is hole in the ground and Mother Earth is to be respected - - - that said a prayer said for the miners their families and everyone including the mine owner!!

Peace..................

I agree, but with every job there is some degree of danger. A mine is a tunnel with hundreds of tons of earth pushing down on it.

Also ,do not forget the bridge disaster, and that was supposed to be safe.
