Yet, no one writes "alittle," and it's the same exact principle.

I totally sympathize. I hadn't seen this usage before joining YA. Now it seems to be everywhere. Well, alot of places anyway :)
My theory is that people are unconsciously using "a lot" in the same way they use "lots", making it one word with no article. It's just another straw on the back of the long-suffering English camel.

LOL! People get angry with me. I can't stand when someone writes 'that aways' instead of 'that way'. It drives me up the wall! I guess basic spelling and grammar wasn't a priority during their school years.

haha it's not just those two words. how about people mixing up good and well? and double negatives! those make me cringe. i could go on forever though. why don't people understand that grammar is our friend? so many people tell me "it doesn't matter!" but it really does, such as when you're applying for a job!
