You need to download antivirus, there are several free products out there. however if you are not sure if there are viruses or some other threats, you should also run an antispyware. you can get antispyware at http://www.2-spyware.com/review-spy-sweeper.html

The best way is to get an antivirus program, some of these even offer adware and spyware components too. I had real trouble with viruses, spyware and adware, and I was trying everything. Eventually I found 'Spyware Terminator' by googling it. It's a fantastic tool and sorts out ALL your PC/Laptop problems. Its free too. I recommend running a full scan for the first time. It does take ages, but its worth it, also set up a scheduled time for it to scan every day, especially when you've been on the net. It always finds something which shouldn't be there.

I personally have set up a time, but also after everytime I've been on the Net, I run it.

If this doesn't work, you may have a registry problem, so try downloading a program that repairs and cleans out you PC/Laptop's registrys

You'll get there! :)

First, get a good antivirus program. If you can't afford commercial software, there are some decent freeware antivirus programs out there. Make sure you have the latest antivirus definitions on the program from the manufacturer (a good antivirus program will always have an update option). Use the antivirus software to do a full system scan and clean. Also, clean up your hard drive: delete your temporary internet files, and your last system restore file that is probably infected, and empty your recycle bin.

Sometimes, even commercial antivirus programs come across a threat that they cannot remove though - those would have to be removed by a pro unless you are able to say, format your hard drive and reinstall your operating system and device drivers yourself (last resort if nothing else works, since you will also need to reinstall all your applications).

If you do have to do a format and reinstall, or if you have to take your computer to a pro, back up your essential files and scan them to make sure none of them are infected, so that you can restore them later. If you have external hard drives, or USB flash drives, be sure to scan those also.

ok this is a relatively easy question, if you need a free virus scanner you can get Avast, it is free, and is rated #1 for free antivirus in consumer reports.

if the virus shuts down your computer, try to boot your computer in safe mode until you can run your anti virus utility
