I have heard that the 1st edition (ISBN ends in 1) Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone Book is worth £5000 to £9000, apparently it was on Blue Peter.

Does anyone know how true this is?

If anything, the movies leave a bad impression for potential readers. My Mom didn't want me to read the books when I was in elementary school because she was caught up in the hype of religious mothers freaking out about the 'evil' of a simple book series. However, when she really stopped caring about it and I saw part of the first movie on TV, I was a little disappoint because it was no where near as good as I expected. When I was in sixth grade we had to read books that were marked with Accelerated Reader stickers, all the Harry Potter novels were on the program so I decided to pick up the first one. I was addicted by the time I reached the middle of the book. The books are fantastic. I am almost seventeen and I still love the series, and a great amount of my classmates like it as well. A lot of my friends who are far into college right now are absolutely obsessed. My History teacher likes the books, my best friend's Mother adores them...they are fantastic reads for people of all ages. Plain and simple.

I've enjoyed all the Harry Potter books. I do not think it will make any one interested in magic(other than pretend) who is not already intersted any more than the old Cowboy Stories made my generation run out and buy anything buttoy revolvers and explosive caps.
In essentials it is Cowboys and Indians with good overcoming bad by magic rather than gunshot. I noticed that the name one of LK Rowlings more severe ctitics appeared as a death eater in the last two books

it's true, but who cares? I love harry potter, but why does anyone need the first ever edition? J.K rowling seems like a pretty ordinary person to me. She's not Jane Austen. Therefore, why would anyone want it?

yeah, it's true, but i don't agree with it! the HP books are good, but they're certainly not the best, JKR just has a very good marketing team.
