In most cases, defragmentation has no noticable preformance boost.
Ifyou want to speed up your computer, there are some frre tools you should use.
Ccleaner (crapcleaner) gets rid of the crap from your computer. If you aren't an expert with computers, you should only use the initial settings, but generally they can speed up you computer quite a bit.
A really great tool I use is FreeRAM Xp Pro. It's a little bit of a hassle when your computer suddenly freezes up when it's running the optimization, but once it's done, your computer will be noticibally faster.
And by the way, Windows does not make the best defrag tool. try another free one online. I use AusLogics Disk Defrag

There's probably too much going on at startup.
have you also used the file cleaner as well as defragmenting?
To speed up your stsrtup. right click the arrow on your taskbar at the bottom of your screen (over to the right near the clock).
Select properties, then startmenu.
Select customise, then reset the number of programmes on start menu to 0
That should help!

You may have a virus, assuming you have an insecure PC. You may also just need to clear up some disc space- virtual memory doesn't work well when there's no free space to write on.
What are your computer specs? You may need to give it more RAM.

dear friend,
just gone through these steps...
1>check ur computer with one standard and updated antivirus(though i dont think its viral problem).....u can opt for AVG free edition
2>check ur PC with one anti spywre.....u can opt for spybooast...its also free
3>at the start menu go to the find...then type *.tmp
delete all tmp files.....
4>use one OS tuning software to free the system registry......(I think 3rd and 4th steps are needed).....
u can use tune up..its also free
basically system defragment can onely realocate HD space not registry.......so noway this process is related to sys boot.......in order to make sys faster...u need to work with registry....
if u ve selected too many things at startup thn also it will take longer time......
first u carry on....thn contact us for further assistance...

go to start, run, then type msconfig, hit enter and go to the startup tab. un-check all boxes except maybe your antivirus program and the obvious microsoft system programs. hit apply and ok. then restart your computer and it changes the startup configuration to not start all kinds of useless programs brought about by advertising and internet browsing. you can also download and use process scanner. and go to process library .com

There is a windows indexing facility that can slow it up a great deal. And some antivirus software can do the same.
