If the restaurant is a nicer one, then it would be good for a woman to dress up a little and wear a skirt or a dress. That's what I would do when going somewhere nicer. If it's something like a buffet or some other sort of family restaurant, it's okay if a woman wears pants because it's more casual.

Come on, a smart man can get into anything a woman wears before or after going to a restaurant. LOL

I think women should wear skirts and dresses more too. It's much more feminine, and it would be really nice if women wore more feminine clothes in restaurants - and in other places too. I'm soo sick of the unisex clothes. Women should dress/look like women and men should dress/look like men...

I'm afraid we won't be dining together then, my friend. I wear pants and jeans when it pleases me. The only etiquette I know of in restaurants (other than fancy ones) is "No shirt, no shoes, no service."

Are you going to wear a tie? Or maybe you could give the pantyhose a try?
Don't get me wrong...I like to wear dresses....I guess I just don't like having someone dictate to me what I should wear. As long as my husband isn't in dirty clothes or ones that are full of holes, I don't give him directions on what to wear. I don't think he'd appreciate that. I can't imagine you'd like being told what to wear, would you?
We just got back from Mexico and some of the restaurants we went to required him to wear long pants. I felt really bad for him...it was really hot outside...too hot for long pants. Women wore whatever they wanted to.
Besides all of that, there are some really nice pants/capris these days. I think they can look very dressy.
Good luck finding a woman who is going to enjoy being dominated and told what to do.

choose for century are you dwelling in? women can placed on what they choose for in eating places. Do you're taking your hat off in eating places? Etiquette? What does etiquette could desire to do with wearing a pair of pants vs. Skirts and clothing? Allowed? Who supplies every person the the superb option to "enable" somebody, every person to do something remotely related to to the way they gown? next factor you realize, we are able to all placed on hats and gloves and dowdy clothing. Do you beat your woman into submission for not wearing a skirt or gown to a eating place?

Restaurants do not dictate pants or dresses for women.
Some of the more elite will require a coat and tie for men.
"Proper etiquette" per what source, please?
Now if my man is taking me out, and he wants me in a dress, it's all good....whatever turns him on.....I'd love to wear a dress that says, "Here's dessert."....

wearing dress makes a woman look more respectful, and noble, rather than rugged looking jeans. It doesn't necessarily mean if you're wearing a dress, you belong to the 40's. Stop it, for women appear more beautiful like that.

What if she pays the bill herself? (It is her guest's birthday after all).
What if she is taking her jobless husband out to dinner?
A special date is, of course, another situation altogether. But you do not specify the occasion.
And personally, as much as I prefer dresses myself, I do not think it is my call to judge the choice of dress another opts for unless it goes seriously against all codes of decency. By that I mean of her own culture, not necessarily my own personal preferences of decent and indecent.
Dress for the occasion. If you can afford to ~ not all of us have such a luxury and wear what we have, not what we wish we had.
