But, the allies had to take North Africa as well in order to stop Hitler from making use of the oil that was there. When the allies landed on the Normandy beaches in 1944, there was already a western front as the allies had previously landed in Italy in 1943.

Remember also that the allies did not want Stalin to gain control of Germany's industrial might.
