Is the black dust coming from my vents simply dust?

I live in an apt. that is around 5 years old, since I have moved in it seems as if the ceiling fans, walls, and ceiling collect a blackish dust (it is quite a bit). The vents are high, near the ceiling fans and you can see where the dust collects and even seems to run a little from the vent. It accumulates so fast.... Is this something I can control and is it a health risk?

If the heat ducts were not cleaned after construction, you may have construction dust in the duct work. Hire a duct cleaning company to clean them out. If the problem returns then you have a different problem that could be caused by the AC coil. Make sure the water is draining properly from the AC coil.

It may be dist, then again it may be "black mold spore" this can be harmful to your health. I would let the landlord know if it's as bad as you say, then see what they're willing to do. The vents need cleaning.

If it is black mold spores, this is a definate health risk.
It could also indicate heavy metals...
Call the Health Department, & ask them how to tell if it is black mold spores, or anything else harmful.
If it is something harmful, you need to learn where it is coming from, & effectively eradicate it.
