My notebook monitor lamp is broken and I need to use multiple monitors option. But, when I try to activate another monitor (normal plug and play), it turns on but immediately the notebooks one take the action. I tried to make the second monitor a default one, but when I apply it, it gets back to the previous settings. Also, I disabled the notebooks one, but the same thing happened. To be certain, I dont want to use both monitors, but only that second one. Thank you so much.

F7 i think... it should have a picture of 2 squares (2 monitors) [this will set them to mirror each other in mac os x, and XP so i'm guessing it will do it in Vista] to turn off the notebook one, you would pretty much have to remove it. I have a macbook and the top 2" of the screen works so i have part of the screen on it and mirrored on a monitor. you can't turn off the main display in os x... don't know on vista [the built in display is as far as i know always the main display[

try right-clicking on the desktop and goto properties and un-check the box saying use this as my default monitor and un-check the box extend my desktop on this monitor, then find your new monitor and check both the boxes, then click apply, then ok, if ok is not clicked and the window is closed the settings may be wiped. This may not work, but through my experiences this should work, at least until the monitor is disconnected or the computer is rebooted.

There should be a Fn + F? key combo that will switch between laptop display / laptop + external display / external display.

check the logos on your F keys for something that looks like a display. OR check your user guide.
