There was a hilarious South Park episode about spontaneous human combustion.
The theory stated that when guys went on dates with girls, they would hold in their farts and the methane would build up until they abrubtly combusted. Ha ha ha

This are the theories behind it but there's nothing that can be proved. It's VERY weird.
Deposits of flammable body fat - Many victims have been overweight - yet others have been skinny.
- Devine Intervention - Centuries ago people felt that the explosion was a sign from God of devine punishment.
- Build-up of static electricity - no known form of electrostatic discharge could cause a human to burst into flames.
- An explosive combination of chemicals can form in the digestive system - due to poor diet.
- Electrical fields that exist within the human body might be capable of 'short circuiting' somehow, that some sort of atomic chain reaction could generate tremendous internal heat.
No satisfactory explanation of Spontaneous Human Combustion has ever been given. It is still an unsolved mystery.

Haha, gases and nerve sparks. What delightful nonsense.
Combustion can take place under certain circumstances. You need a source of ignition and a wick in the form of the right sort of clothing. You need a restricted amount of air. And you need a person, preferably dead already.
The person turns into a sort of candle and will burn very slowly but emitting very high heat. So the next day they find somebody turned to ash lying next to their stove with one untouched leg left in perfect condition, and all the plastic items in the room melted.
If there is too much air, like a window or door left open then the whole room will go up in flames instead of just the person.
This theory was tested by wrapping a dead pig in a blanket and setting fire to it. The fire burned very slow but it was so hot that even the bones turned to ash.

I believe that the water content of humans is too high to support combustion.

My husband thinks that it is to do with combinations of gases in our bodies becoming ignited by sparks from the electricity produced by our nerves. I will just believe him because I don't have a clue and don't really want to think about it.

It is an urban (and suburban i guess) myth.
Sometime ago I watched a very good documentary that set the story straight.
