Well, without being biased, the One Album Everyone Should Own is without a doubt:

Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles.

This album changed the way that we listen to popular music today. Before this album, rock and pop was throwaway music for teenagers and the lower class. This album changed that because it caused the majority of society to view the body of work as "art." This album was light years ahead of it's time and inspired every musician to explore and stretch the boundaries of sound. Listening to it now might it might be hard to understand this because we have become accustomed to hearing a variety of new sounds while at the same time, rarely does one listen to an album in its entirety. The advent of MP3 has changed the way we listen to music once again. But if you do have the patience (1 hour), lay down on your couch one day, put on Sgt. Pepper, and listen to the WHOLE album from start to finish because that is what it was designed for. It is not just a collection of singles, but a complete body of art. Maybe, it will change the way you listen to music now too.

Blood Sugar Sex Magic by the Red Hot Chili Peppers...because its fuses the bluegrass/funk sound with rock, and has many songs (suck my kiss, breaking the girl, under the bridge, give it away, etc.) that are still very popular after 16 years.

Sublime, by Sublime...
this bands final record brings the whole reggae/ska sound into music that shows up again through all sorts of 90s bands.

Surreleastic Pillow by the Jefferson Air Plane..
the jefferson airplane helped shape the sound of 60s rock that has merged into classic rock and eventually modern rock, and this is some great stuff!
