Smoke detectors "in theory" are supposed to detect smoke. However, some react to loud noises, door bells, cooking vapors etc. Get a GOOD one with a warranty as while they are quite useful, they can also be a major pain !

there's two types of smoke alarm, ionic and photoelectric. Ionizing ones "smell" smoke, so don't use them near a kitchen or cooking area cos they'll go off every time you do toast, use them in hallways and bedrooms as they detect fire much earlier. The photoelectric ones "see" smoke use them near kitchens. Yes, dust and bathroom steam can activate these as well. your stockist can give advice on which is best and the best location to avoid dead spots.
