I have never understood why everything the President signs is called an " act " for example the Military Commisions " Act " or the Farm Security and Rural Investment " Act " .

My question is , is the word " Act " just lingo or does it mean something , like the bill is " activated " ? I just found the word wierd .

I think it's shorthand for "act of Congress". Also an interesting pun on acts in a play.
