I think the lifstyle of being such a superstar is too much for a mere human to handle. You don't know who is your friend for real and who is there just for your money. If you believe Priscilla's book, he took downers to relax and rest and had to take uppers to function and be awake...
As for him being a great man, the entertainer/star was great, but in the end he was just a man.

Most people don't care if great musicians are full of drugs. Some people even believe it helps them create music. This may be true to a point, but its just the only profession where you can get away with it!
