It's not exactly wrong, modesty is a virtue that seems to be in shorter supply than it once was.
However, as long as you don't morph into one of these obnoxious people who are constantly tooting their own horns, there is nothing wrong with patting yourself on the back once in a while. Sometimes that is the only way you are going to get a compliment.
If I waited to get a compliment from the harpy I am unfortunately (but hopefully not much longer) married to, four or five Presidents will have moved into and back out of the White House, the next Ice Age will have come and gone (I mean a real Ice Age, not another sequel to the animated movie), and the Pittsburgh Pirates might even win a World Series in the meantime. So, when I feel I truly deserve it, I quietly compliment myself.

If you give yourself compliments, the opinions of others won't weigh so heavy on your mind. "All the compliments they gave her went to her head"

Hey hey.. you are absolutely right!
Compliments and rewards are meant to be earned, under full respects and glory given by others.
If one praises oneself, or to brag how much he or she does, this person is useless and is definitely a calculative+ambitious person.
Please don't stop thinking that you are wrong. You are on the right route, I fully support you.

I don't compliment myself either. I usually insult myself. But then my girlfriend hits me for it.

I don't care about compliments from anyone, nor do I give myself any. Its illogical to do so.
