Well it sort of depends upon the business and the type of internship. When we hired interns for temporary work, summer jobs between sophomore and junior years in college we would generally give them jobs of a fairly low level but in the field that they would work in. We also hired summer interns out of high school and they were basically gofers.
Of course we all know what Bill Clinton did with his interns so be careful - especially if you're working in Washington, DC.

Intern assignments vary with the company. You can be anything from gofer to someone with very serious responsibilities, depending on the needs of your boss.

It's fair to ask in an interview what typical assignments would be if you end up at their company as an intern.
