Is that why it's hard for someone to put in a tampon when they have not engaged in sexual intercourse or put one on in the past?

Using a tampon may break your hymen but you will still be a virgin, it has nothing to do with intercourse.
You may have already torn your hymen with physical exercise.

it can break it, just like with any physical activity (including intercourse) and sometimes it won't (break). of course, this does NOT mean are your being devirginized, that can only happen through engaging in sexual intercourse.

you might be tensing up and as a result, your vaginal muscles are constricting and that's making it difficult to insert the tampon. another possibility is that you may be using an applicator that is uncomfortable for the insertion. you should try tampax pearl tampons. you must totally relax and try different suggestions that are listed (visually) on the info pamphlet that is inside of the box of tampons. the first couple of times can be tricky, but with practice you will figure it out. a few tips: relax, insert the applicator at a slight angle (towards the back) instead of straight up, insert most of the applicator so the tampon is properly positioned. if you do it correctly, you won't feel a thing.

**also, this may sound kind of crazy, but when practicing, make sure you are on your period. i know someone who kept trying to insert one when she wasn't menstruating and this was part of her problem in wearing one!

It can break your hymen. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Depends on how your hymen is, not all girls are the same.

Some girls just can't wear tampons. I have a friend who can't b/c of a tilted cervix or something like that.

Yes it can, but contrary to what Yazmin says, it doesn't make you lose your virginity. You lose your virginity by having sex.
