1. Jim Brown. 5.3 yards per carry in a team with no passing game and defenses putting 11 men on front because everybody knew he would carry the ball. Since he came to the league until he retired he played every single game and made it to the Pro Bowl every single season.

2. Johnny Unitas, the real Mr. Clutch. In the "greatest game ever played" move the ball 73 yards in the 4th quarter to tie the game in the 1958 NFL championship. Then he moved the ball 80 yards in overtime for the winning TD. With this and many other performances, football gained the popularity it has nowadays.

3. Lawrence Taylor, changed the way to play defense.

4. Jerry Rice, despite he's not a HOFer yet. Holds the all time records in receptions, rec. yards and rec. TDs, but the impressive thing is that the 2nd place is not even close. He also holds the season records in rec. TD and rec. yards.

5. Darell Green, 4.125 speed. With Deion Sanders he was the best shutdown corner despite his 5'8 height. But Green was also a fearless tackler while Sanders was average at best in this area.

It's hard to pick only 5, a player who deserves a mention is Anthony Muñoz, the best Offensive Tackle ever with TE receiving abbility.

Hard to compare players of different eras. There's at least 2 modern dayplayers I believe will be in the top 5 when they get to the HOF. P Manning and Tomlinson.

If I were to pick 5 now, I'd pick:
Jim Brown
Walter Payton
Barry Sanders
Dick Butkus
Dan Marino

This is Football Hall of Famers isn't it? Why people naming non hall of famers and 1 lost soul naming baseball players?
