i know how to do a chinese staircase around a pen. you get a pen and take the ink capsule out. then take the end of the piece of boondoggle and put it in the top of the ink capsule where the hole is. if it won't fit, then bite the pen a little bit and put the boondoggle in tight. then just do the chinese staircase down the pen. when there is about 1and 1half inches left. then just wrap the gimp around the rest for easy gripping. i dont know how to use 2 colors. if you want more projects with rexlace go to boondoggleman.com. please email me at tennisguy1995@verizon.net and tell me what you think. or if you have questions put them in the email. i really want you to reply though. ps IT WON'T BE TOO BULKY.

You would do it round the filling of the pen, so you take just the inner bit with the ink and tip.

Here is a website in Dutch with clear photos of the thing being done:
http://www.yoarra.nl/pen.php

You can use every knot or stitch, as long as you just use the right bit of the pen.

If you use this stitch:

you might be able to do it round a narrow pen when it still is complete.
You can also do it with two colours, the Boondoggle man calls it cobra stitch, I call it square knot turning, or half square knot.
On this site you find both:

To get the two colours you need to use two strings, hide the ends inside the knots/stitches, or put them with the filling of the pen as base for the whole length.

I think if you did that design, or any other around a pen, it would be entirely too bulky...even if it could be done. Have you thought about doing polymer clay around your pen? Go to the DIY network craft section to find out how to do it. I'll give you the site address. When you get there, search for the Carol Duvall show # 546. It will show you how to do it.
