If at all possible, I don't buy anything, and just give them a money donation on the spot. I have too many things as it is. Sometimes, to make sure that no one is stealing money, they make you buy something, and in those cases, I usually buy something like a pen or something edible, so I don't have to find a place to store it later.

Wine.
I buy wine regularly from the Guide Dogs Association of Australia. The wine is from Tyrrell’s wines which is quite a reputable winery in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales. (So it's not "el cheapo" stuff)
Love their Shiraz Cabernet.
I get good wine to drink, Tyrell sell their wine, Guide Dog Assoc gets a percentage of profit as donation from Tyrell. Everyone wins!

Here, they have these paper ribbons. You pay a dollar to write your name on one, then they hang them around the store to show how much money they've collected. Usually the cashier asks each customer to buy one. I do (Unless I don't have another dollar!) because I don't have a lot of cash to donate in general. Usually not enough for the merchandise they sell - LOL!

I usually ask what percentage of the money actually goes to the charity, then laugh when they either don't know or admit it is less than 10%.

I dont. How do you know its a valid charity? If they dont have and Identification card or some form of ID with the actual Charity name why would you give them money?

Greetings! At any yard, garage or back yard sale, I always peruse the books. Books are my favorite item to buy. Take care.
