Hi. Some friends of mine have suggested that I use Rent-A-Coder to hire someone for an Internet project that I am working on. My problem is that I don't have any experience with web development and so I don't know what is a fair price to pay for what I want done. Additionally, I don't know the correct terms to use when explaining what features I need on my site. I want to create a site that has all of the features of www.shopstyle.com plus more. From looking at that website, how much do you think this may cost me to get done?

Web design is fairly inexpensive simply because there are so many people that know how to do it and it's well...easy.

Just post the site you want to mimic on RAC and tell them what you want.

Taking a quick look at the site, I would say you need someone familiar with JavaScript, CSS, Photoshop, PHP and MySQL.

You want to work with someone who understands your requirements and is able to implement it on time and on budget. A good consultant will work with you on a design, give you a statement of work and quote a price. Read the statement carefully and understand that having a website run on a computer is different from having it hosted professionally.

It would not be fair to quote an amount without understanding your requirements. Quality costs money, that is simple. Also keep in mind that a website needs to be updated regularly. In some cases you can do that yourself, but an easy to use content management system for your website could get expensive. As you know, there are some good WYSIWYG web editors (dreamweaver, microsoft expression web) that make it easy for you to edit an existing site.

What I'd recommend doing is posting your project on Craigslist (its free to post and you will get responses from local developers). If you go with RentACoder you will be dealing with a person most likely electronically, who most likely will not speak english, and most likely isn't especially good at what they do, just says they are. If you go with Craigslist, post your project, what it requires, what their rate is per hour/project, their location, and examples of their work. This way you can find someone relatively close to you so you can have face to face and more accountability with them, not to mention better communication and hopefully someone who really knows what they are doing. Alot of people say they can do this and that but really only know very little (and these are the ones willing to do cheap projects) shame is you will still have to pay someone to fix their work and to do it right, so it will cost even more.

Outsourcing really has trashed the industry IMO. Cheap web design and development that drives prices down and takes money from developers like me, cause someone is $5/hour cheaper.

If the poster wants, email me and I can give you a quote, a very reasonable quote. I also offer 6 months free support. Let's see the outsourcers top that.
