Because their accents tend to stress vowels and drop consonants, while singers tend to stress the harder sounds for rhythm purposes and stretch the vowels into barely recognizable runs anyway.

So the accent is minimized while singing.

They DO.
Keane, Coldplay, Duran Duran, The Beatles in most of their songs sound British for example.
Rock n' Roll / Soul has black American roots and usually sounds better with a particular American accent but it's that particular sound that is being emulated. It's not any old american accent that is chosen to emulate.

Um they sound British to me. Maybe you only recognize one accent rathaer than the dozens of accents the Brits have.

Better to ask "Why do so many American Punk bands have a British accent? (i'm looking at you Green Day)"

That is true a lot of times but not 100%. Look at Oasis or The Psychedelic Furs. No hiding the accent for either band.

because it is rock and roll, which is from america. early pink floyd (as in with syd barret) sounds british, and thats what made them stand out against the other british bands.

bands like bloc party and franz ferdinand kind of do. they don't sound american or anything anyway.
Also Lily Allen, the streets, the libertines all spring to mind. they sound british

The parts of the brain used for speech--giving rise to one's accent--and the parts of the brain used for singing are slightly different. Thus, when someone is singing they aren't using the "accent" parts; we hear this as "having no accent".

IM NOT EXACTLY HELPING. BUT I LAUGHED WHEN I SAW THIS QUESTION. CAUSE MY FAVORITE BAND EVER IS DEF LEPPARD. AND IVE NEVER HEARD THE SLIGHTEST HINT OF AN ACCENT WHEN JOE SINGS. AND IVE ALWAYS WONDERED ABOUT THAT. EVEN BLACK SABBATH DONY SOUND IT A BIT.
