Blueberries come in dwarf cultivars called 'Tophat' or 'Northsky' that are very pretty. They grow about 1.5' x 1.5' Combine these with cranberries that also like a very acid soil and you have a great pairing.
They will fruit poorly if the soil pH isn't in the 4.0 to 5.0 range which is difficult to maintain unless you follow some simple precautions. First, use peat moss as the base of the potting mix. Do not use regular potting soil that is peat based as lime has been added to counteract the acidity. Regular peat is ~ 3.5-4.5 pH, in most cases. Add some compost to the peat for nutrients. Use a fertilizer labeled for azaleas. Blueberries do not require much fertilization so go very light on the nutrients. You can buy universal pH strips at the drug store. Then add vinegar to the water so the soil stays acid. Test the water before using by placing a drop on a strip.

Many people grow small trees in pots. Mulberries, kumquats, dwarf oranges, dwarf grapefuit, or lemons. Almonds, apples, apricots, cherries, nectarines, and peaches have genetic dwarf varieties. http://www.crfg.org/tidbits/container.html

I have grown peppers and tomatoes in containers on the patio since having a garden in my neighborhood is against my homeowner's association rules. I usually grow the cherry or grape variety of tomatoes. Mm, yummy, nothing like a berry right off the vine.

Blueberries are a great container fruit, because they have shallow roots, have wonderful tasting fruit, and they're good for you. They also make nice privacy screens.
