Sure, it depends on the particular situation and the person you're dealing with and how familiar you might perceive that person to be regarding the subject matter.

A more gentler term that would better replace the offensively condescending "dumbed down" might be to just call it a "simplified" version.

It's not a matter of the person being "dumb" or stupid but rather, you might have to explain about something in simpler terms (dumbed down/simplified) that you yourself might be expert in but, the person you're trying to explain it to isn't familiar with the usual technical terminology you might use if speaking with one of your peers who is also an authority on the topic and you happen to both "speak the same language".

A good example would be a Doctor explaining to his patient just what the patient's ailment is. Now of course none of us without a Medical Degree would be able to understand what the Doctor is talking about if he used the strict medical terms and language that he would use if talking to another Doctor....
so, for the patient's benefit, the Doctor would explain the problem in "layman's terms" or, to refer back to the subject of this question..."dumbed down".

I don't say "dumb things down" but I do find myself explaining things more simply. But that's only if I'm talking about school. I'm a mechanical engineering major, and my hubby, family, and friends are not engineers. Half the time they go "Huh?". Not their fault. It doesn't mean they are dumb either. They are smart.

Now when I worked at the grocery store....I had to "dumb things down" to people all the time!! LOL! Lots and Lots of patience needed.

Never! I am who I am. If they cannot understand me then I do not see a need to continue the conversation.

Yeah, I can think of 2 dear friends to me in particular. I have to try extra hard not to show it in my facial expression.
