I'm looking for specific places to stay that are clean, safe and inexpensive. They can be hotels but also creative ideas such as campuses or convents.

Depends on what part of the city you are visiting. Stay away from the hotels at the airport, they will be expensive. There are a huge cluster of hotels in Overland Park by the convention and trade show buildings. Those can be expensive or fairly reasonable.
One of our landmarks is the White Haven Hotel. Still family owned after 50 years and almost always has the NO Vacancy light on.

Kansas City is fairly spread out. What area are you looking for ? A friend of mine recommends the White Haven Motel, it is a family owned in Overland Park, KS. Overland Park also has every chain hotel you can imagine

Any hotel or motel will do. I'm sure if you are an attractive woman and dress scantily about the house you might be able to find a man who could put you up for next to nothing.

I don't think you could stay in a Convent but, there should be lots of exciting places to stay.
