I love the thrill of the hunt.

I collect coins. It doesn't have to cost me a lot. I can go to the bank and pick of a box of coin (whichever denomination you like) for exactly face value. I can go through and pull out the better ones (there are books to help with this or websites).

The coins that I don't want can be returned to the bank and put straight back into my account (though it's often better to return the coins to a different bank (not just a different branch but a different bank) so that I don't search the same boxes over and over).

Some things to search for: wheat pennies, silver dimes, silver quarters, old coins, error coins, etc.

Money can be one of them, most collectibles go up over the years in price. I collect coins and know that from experience. It is also the thrill of the chase so to speak to go out and find the coins you need. It is not as easy as some think. To me it is also a learning experience and a history lesson. They can be a lot of fun and pleasure collection coins, medals and tokens, as well as paper money. It is a hobby for the rich for sure, but there is a lot of room for just us average Joe's. Blue T has it right, I used to do that many years ago and still will go through a roll once in a while.

Collecting normalizes your blood pressure and adds years to your life. You could collect banknotes (world paper money), because that's what I collect and that gives me a lot of satisfaction as I can enjoy the educational benefits of worldwide currency banknotes, and also exchange or trade them with collectors, buy them from dealers (sometimes) or from shops and I can also sell them decades later for more money to other collectors or even to investors. I have a collection of 17 thousand + different world banknotes and I am still adding more to it. I used to collect stamps, but I find larger-than-stamps banknotes to be more rewarding in experience than stamps or postcards.

it depends on what they collect, some do it for status, some for knowledge, some for money, sometimes its sentimental, or you just like the objects and want more. Also it makes it easier to decide what to get someone for their birthday ;)
