Nope, you won't get a virus from programs like MSN or doing something on them like adding someone. However if you download stuff on there you could get some. There are also alot of programs like Zwinky, or free cursors, programs like those are full of viruses. I almost blew up on my friend when she downloaded one one my computer (:

Um, I don't think you have a virus. Your friend is probably tweaking or something. If you really think you have a virus and may want to scan, here is a list of FREE Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware programs that work very well. You can get them all at: http://www.download.com/

Ad-Aware 2007
Spybot Search & Destroy
AVG Anti-Virus
Avast Anti-Virus
Windows Defender
SuperAntiSpyware (my favorite)
SuperAdBlocker
SpywareBlaster (doesn't scan but prevents spyware from being installed)

RogueRemover (Scans for rogue programs)
TweakNow RegCleaner (Cleans out old registry items and speeds up your computer)

Sometimes when people add you or you add them they can actually hack into your computer because they have a program that will hack into anyones computer and they can also transmit virus's that way and also when you download files they may have a virus attached to them i would suggest going to computer shop and getting the norton internet security program and that has a fire wall and blocks out all hackers and viruses hopew that was of some help

Just run a virus scan (you do have antivirus protection, don't you).

The scan will tell whether or not you have a virus, and if you do, it will get rid of it for you.

Virus traits:

1. they make your computer slower.

2.they might clog your internet connection

3. they fill your computer with annoying popups.

4. some things don't work right.

(viruses do not wipe everything on your hard drive.)

Just scan everything you download from the internet.

get free antivirus software like avast! here http://avast.com also you can't get any viruses from msn unless you open any files your friends send you but it's rare.

I have identified your technical level. I would recommend aol instead.
