For one reason, no one's going to survive jumping out of a jumbo jet at 35,000 feet traveling at 600 miles per hour.

But, in a plane that's in trouble and going down, you have a much better chance of survivability if the plane goes down in the ocean and some or all of the passengers are able to get out of the plane with those flotation devices.

Another reason...who, even in the most extreme circumstances where they (could) or would need to parachute out of an airliner, has the experience to overcome the fear of standing in the doorway of the jet and being told to "JUMP!" by the stewardess? Imagine how long the line would get waiting for the people in front of you to finally get the nerve up to jump?

Trish, you get the STAR because it was an interesting question that I'm sure many other's have wondered about.

1. Most jetliners travel between 35,000-45,000 feet above sea level.

**Jumping from anywhere above 20,000 feet without proper equipment (i.e., breathing apparatus, total face protection, gloves, etc.) would pretty much invite certain death.

**Jumping from a jet traveling more than 300 mph. would most certainly kill you (remember the Schwarzenegger film where he jumped from the "Lear" type jet? We all got a good laugh outta that one ...).

**Passengers would all have to be rather uncomfortably strapped into a rig (harness) for hours at a time. It's bad enough just sitting on the tarmac waiting for your "stick" to board.

**There really IS much more to parachuting than just "falling" out of an aircraft (even with a static line deployment).

Have a nice weekend, I hope this helps.

Because it is more likely that a plane will crash than something will happen where you have to abandon the plain in midair. Also, not everyone knows how to skydive, and that would be much more dangerous than crashing.
