Hmm, I would never say having an appointment with any kind of doctor could be considered "enjoyable"--even if everything was clear and perfect so you didn't have to have any work done. The best I can say is that if you keep your teeth and gums in good condition by flossing and brushing, not drinking soft drinks, eating healthy, etc., at least your visits to the dentist won't involve a lot of drilling and injections and surgery, etc. These days there are dentists who provide you with music and/or tv and/or computer games to distract you (but still, I'd rather be somewhere else doing those things).

If you find a way let me know. No, really you just have to try and relax and not get over worked. I am still a big kid, so I ask my dentist for the laughing gas, it helps to relax me. I was told by my dentis that the more tense you are the more harder it is for the shot they give you to work. When me and my sister was younger she was always extra nervous about the dentist and she would have to get like 5 shots just to numb her mouth b/c she wasn't relaxed, so I learned fast to get the gas and fall asleep fast. Good Luck!!!

Go in with cheerful attitude. Starting with the receptionist, greet everyone with a smile and cheery hello. That alone will help you to relax and feel more comfortable.

Tell the hygenist and dentist any concerns you have before sitting down in the chair. There is always nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and other mild sedatives they can give you to help you relax and survive most common procedures relatively pain free. One sedative even will block your memory of what transpired.

Find a laser dentist like I did. You usually don't even need a shot - they just flash-flash-flash with the laser and you're done. They can use it on everything from cavities to root canals, except for removing silver fillings.

Also, tell the hygenist to be gentle when cleaning your teeth. I have to remind the constantly, because just the cleaning hurts like crazy.

Think about how good your teeth will look after the appointment is over therefore you can convince your self that it is worth it and get rid of the anxiety.
