If I were to purchase the E6850, would I even need to get ddr2 800 ram. I heard the maximum usage of the ram from the 6850 would only be ddr 667. Please enlighten me.

You only want to get ddr2 667. In response to the other posts, a mother board can limit the speed, so you need to make sure that you get a mother board that supports up to 1333 mhz front side bus. But, the processor also limits the maximum front side bus you can get. In the case of this processor, the maximum front side bus is 1333 mhz. Since ddr means double data rate, it means that the effective front side bus the ram can support is twice the number that is advertised. So ddr2 667 can support two times 667 mhz, which is 1333 mhz. If you got ddr2 800 mhz, it could support a front side bus of 1600 mhz, but that is more than the processor can support. So, if you got this processor you wouldn't want to spend extra money getting faster ram because the processor would still be a bottle neck.

Most boards supporting the 1333 fsb of the E6850 also support ddr2 800 RAM. Enthusiast motherboards even support up to ddr2 1066. Sample here:

NO.
RAM compatibility is determined by your motherboard.

Check your manual for RAM compatibility.

Most CPUs work best with a certain speed of memory.

I hope this helps.
