innate, if we stilled lived in the trees, we would need to survive, the only way i would know better is to watch, listen and say nothing..but mimic the actions of others. Today, we
have textbooks of how things should be done and a society
that caters to...we dont need to make choices because others
make them for us... so we remain, the dependent way longer
than we should...your question is about maturity? living in the
trees, maturity would come with my need to survive, innate.
affluent lifestyles, maturity will never happen, an educated
background, text book induced, for the others, they will be
told what to do, when to do it and how to do...they lack the
inner spirit, dont have the education and definitely not
rich enough, but do what they are told...how mature is that?

Maturity in itself is complex. It is a mental-biological process that can be speed up by:
(1) our social environment consisting of difficult and unprecedented events which we need to find ways to get through
(2) our mental model and how well we adapt to changes
(3) our inner motivation and strengths
(4) our dentrits in the brain that connect all our past experiences and memory together to effect a change in mindset through reflection with the self
(5) our part of the brain called the cerebral cortex that helps us to make analysis

Rather than discuss whether we have a choice or it being innate, we should think of ourselves as expanding our capacity in the quantity and quality of thinking, which in turn brings about positive changes - of which we called maturity.

Great question!!

I believe that some people do not mature enough with age because they suffer from a greater degree of the sense of insecurity... this obviously can not be caused through any conscious choice of the individual concerned, although specific circumstances and environment could well have been the catalysts.

I see people all the time for whom maturity sure doesn't seem to be innate, so by process of elimination I guess it's a choice we each have to make at some point.

Maturity is adapting to growing old. In that sense, we have very little direct control over our maturity. We are forced to adapt to our aging if we acknowledge the need to do so. Others, for reasons unknown to me, do not acknowledge this necessity as a prerequisite for lasting happiness.

By the way, in disagreement with the above post, addiction is not a sign of immaturity, and it is rather one-dimensional to assume it as such. The great majority of us are addicted to something.

Being mature is a chosen response to one's perceived environment/ situation.

I don't think its automatic, because factors such as previous experience help a lot because we learn what works and what doesn't in any given situation and are therefore more likely to use the effective option given a similar situation in the future.

We choose somewhat but there are sub-conscious forces within us that psychologists have researched in depth and found that these forces decide a lot of what we do, think, say, etc. without us even knowing about it.

many of us never mature, and never accept the responsibilities of adulthood. why else do people pollute, and enslave others for profit and pleasure? Mature adults would never do such things as they should know better.

"Do onto others as you would want others to do onto you."
If everyone did this, we'll be living in a perfect world by now.

"Don't crap in your home" and what do we do? earth is our home and we crap in it, it's only a matter of time before we suffocate from the stench.
