generally, you need to have the computer recovery disk (if you bought a branded PC instead of self-built), which is bootable cdrom usually. so when you boot your machine to cdrom instead of usual hard disk, you will be given option to restore to factory settings (ie. hard disk partition for o/s will be reformatted)
but some of the smarter systems these days built that into a hidden partition on your hard drive, so if you press the correct key during the booting process, this option will pop up and cancel the normal boot process. you can then select various options, including the full reformat option.

Its called a recovery "process" . Sometimes when you buy a computer you will get a CD that says Recovery Disc. If you dont have this CD, then maybe its because you have a partition in your hard drive that will do it for you. To see whether its is in your computer go to My Computer and look for the drive that says, obviously, Recovery. If the computer does not have any of this....then ......Good Luck :)

Formatting, Reinstallation, System Restore, etc.

Reformatting. This erases all the files on the computer and you must reinstall the OS.
