Your arm's arteries are the first site where a small amount of the meningitis itself was introduced. It is more concentrated here. Over a few hours, your blood will circulate the contents of the shot throughout your body, "unclogging" your sore arm's arteries and easing the stress/pain.
If there's abnormal swelling, itching, or inflammation, call your doctor immediately.

Certain things injected into the muscles cause pain or aching just because they have been jammed in the space and not absorbed yet. Other times the needle may have split or touched something sensitive or damage one fiber of a muscle, the pain indicating repair is going on. Normally, this goes away quickly, but if it does not talk to your caregiver.
I have had a lot of shots, including long acting bicillian for a strep infection and learned that different shot givers had different skills. My mother, rest her soul, was pretty bad, I found out after nurses reacted to my requests and did shots with very low pain. Relaxing certainly helps.

It's also because of a mild inflammatory reaction (I think that's right...it's been a while since bio...). Anyway, it's a somewhat complicated reaction to a foreign substance that causes lactic acid to come to the area, as well as increased blood flow, causes heat and soreness and sometimes swelling...Anyway, make sure to move your arm a lot. It will help, even though it hurts.

Because the shot goes through to your muscle, and you often will feel the result of your muscle repairing itself.
